Hurt Kids – Jacob’s Success Story We see many hurt kids at The Institutes and Jacob was one of them. Jacob was born three months prematurely. He spent the first six months of his life in the Neonatal Intensive Care unit fighting for his life, along with his devoted parents. He underwent nine surgeries at this time. Autism Success Story Siao His parents were deeply concerned about him when he was 18 months of age. He had not begun to speak, and did not respond to others. He lacked eye contact, and preferred to play by himself. He slept poorly, and began having asthma attacks.By three years of age, Siao had been diagnosed as autistic, his lack of speech persisted and he was socially withdrawn. Hurt Kids Success Story Kira Kira was born with a congenital malformation of her nose. She was not breathing or sucking by herself. She had two surgeries on her nose, the first 16 days after birth and the second just after her first birthday. The Institutes program at home, Kira was not yet able to crawl or creep. When the staff saw Kira for the first time, she had just turned two years old and was creeping about 300 meters a day.

Maria, and her twin sister, Anna, were diagnosed with Trisomy 21 at birth. Both Mother and Father attended the What to Do About Your Brain Injured Child course when they were 11 months old. At sixteen months of age, Maria was diagnosed with leukemia, and was immediately hospitalized. During Maria’s long hospital stay, her parents made certain she had the opportunity to creep. As a result, Maria walked for the first time while still in the hospital.
