National Aeronautics and Space Administration

The Institutes has had a stimulating and productive relationship with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for many years. On May 18, 1978, The Institutes and NASA held a jointly sponsored conference at NASA's Ames Research Center entitled, "Human Neurological Development: Past, Present and Future" (NCP 2063, 11/78).

In the ensuing years, many NASA scientists visited The Institutes as lecturers or as advisors participating in NASA's Technology Utilization Program. Among these were Dr. Gerald Soffen, Director of the Viking Mars Mission; Dr. John Billingham, Director S.E.T.I (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence); Dr. Ralph Pelligra, Chief Medical Officer at Ames; and NASA research scientists H. C. Vykukal, Dr. Patricia Cowings, and Dr. Bruce Webbon. In April 1985, astronaut Rhea Seddon carried The Institutes flag into orbit on STS 51D.

The support and guidance that NASA has given to the staff of The Institutes over these many years has been of inestimable value to the brain-injured children of the world and their families. The Institutes is most appreciative of this valuable alliance and look forward to a continuing working relationship with NASA.

NASA and Liza Minnelli participated in a Public Service Announcement about the work of The Institutes that is currently shown on national television. Our mutual interests in respiratory physiology and gas exchange resulted in a collaborative publication entitled "Rett Syndrome: Stimulation of Endogenous Biogenic Amines" (Neuropediatrics 23 (1992) 131-137)
