Enrique and Beatriz

Enrique began The Institutes Early Development Program in Mexico when he was six months old. The How To Multiply Your Baby's Intelligence Course had not yet been created, but his parents had visited The Institutes and had read the book How To Teach Your Baby To Read.

At eighteen months, Enrique could swim underwater several yards and was a real water baby. By two years of age, he spoke in complete sentences with perfect articulation. He began to read, do math, and learned hundreds of Bit of Intelligence cards. He easily understood and spoke English, his second language, and began to learn Japanese.

Later he began playing the violin, and doing an active physical program. By four, he could ride a bike independently, ski downhill and brachiate sideways, backwards and twisting. He could read and write in both English and Spanish. He enjoyed math, reading and gaining encyclopedic knowledge.

At six years of age, Enrique went to a traditional academic school, where he was loved by his teachers and other students, whom he helped with their work. When he went home at the end of the school day, he continued learning with his mother and older sister, Beatriz.

When Enrique was eight years old, his family came to The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential in Philadelphia so that the children could spend a year in the International School of The Evan Thomas Institute. He began to study Shakespeare, run cross country daily and learn gymnastics, ballet and computer science.

Enrique later attended school in Canada, where the teachers noted that he was a fine student who had a "keen sense of justice." He made friends easily and was at the top of his class in addition to being a member of the soccer team, ski team, and choir.

Whenever possible, Enrique and Beatriz would return to The Institutes in Philadelphia to help out in any way possible. They enjoyed the opportunity to assist in the clinic, caring for brain-injured children and acting as translator for Spanish-speaking families.

Enrique received his bachelor's degree in architecture and received special recognition for his design projects. As an undergraduate he was employed by one of the outstanding architectural firms in Mexico, where he reached the position of design-principal. His writings about the firm's work were published by one of Europe's most prestigious editorial houses. He also organized a congress of architecture held in Mexico City with the hope of establishing Mexico's place in international architecture.

Enrique has a strong sense of purpose. He writes, "The country is in a very bad situation and everybody is affected. So that is another responsibility I have: to be the best architect and human being I possible can, for in my country the opportunities I've had make me a very privileged person."

Enrique is studying for a master's degree in architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

Beatriz is currently enrolled at the London School of Economics, studying for a master's degree in economics and social development. She was awarded a full scholarship to the program by the British Council.

Beatriz and Enrique have remained as bright and caring as they were as children. As adults, they possess a clear understanding of the opportunities they were give -and a wealth of opportunities before them.

Their mother, Beatriz Carrancedo, is an art historian by education and a professional mother by choice. She lives in Mexico City, Mexico, where she raised her son and daughter .

Their father, who died just before Enrique was born, held a master's degree in economics.
